Advancement Courses Announces Partnership with Teach For America Appalachia to Expand Higher Ed and Employment Opportunities to Underserved Students

HOBOKEN, NJ (June 3, 2022) – Advancement Courses, a Wiley brand (NYSE: WLY) and leader in K–12 professional development, today announced a new strategic partnership with Teach for America Appalachia to provide higher education courses for Accelerate ED: Seamless Pathways to Degrees and Careers. The Accelerate ED initiative, funded through grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will help high schoolers obtain an associate degree just one year after graduation, setting them on a path to future economic opportunity.

Backed by its decades of experience creating meaningful, career-focused higher education content, Advancement Courses will design courses for Teach for America Appalachia’s Eastern Kentucky Student Success Pipeline, whose goal is to provide flexible, credit-bearing general education and industry-specific coursework to more than 12,200 rural students across 35 schools in 12 districts. The pilot program, which will take place at Harlan Independent Schools and the Floyd County School of Innovation, will prepare students for quality employment opportunities just one year after high school by helping them attain an associate degree, internship, apprenticeship, or equivalent certification or employment experience.

In the Appalachian region of Kentucky, only 22.8% of adults aged 25 and older have an associate degree or higher, and the mean household income is just 71% of the rest of the state’s average household income. Accelerate ED seeks to find practical solutions to barriers that currently limit opportunities for students in these underserved areas and instead create innovative pathways to high-quality, career-oriented educational opportunities.

“My team is beyond excited to contribute to the long-term growth and success of the Appalachian region and its students,” said Brad Clark, Senior Director and General Manager of Advancement Courses. “We’re committed to providing flexible credit that counts and that allows school leaders to create more flexible school schedules. If we can do that, our local employer, workforce, and postsecondary partners in the region will be able to increase the accessibility of work-based learning opportunities—aligned to regional labor market data—for all Eastern Kentucky students within the confines of the school day.”
