A Five-Point Framework for Challenging Educational Inequities
Equity | K-12

Addressing inequities is a crucial part of education, but it can also be overwhelming. When we say inequities, what do we mean exactly? How do we identify inequities in our specific school environment, and when we do, how do we track and prioritize them in a way that actually makes a difference?
In this course, you will explore a framework laid out by Smith et al. (2017) in their book, Building Equity: Policies and Practices to Empower All Learners, on five key areas of inequity: physical integration, social–emotional, opportunity to learn, instructional excellence, and engaged and inspired learners. We will dive deeply into what each of these areas are and how they can impact instruction and students’ learning and growth. In addition, you’ll learn what indicators to watch out for and how you can collect data to measure and monitor inequities in your school and classroom.
With the strategies from this course, you’ll be equipped to take a data-informed approach to unearthing inequities in your school setting to promote a better learning experience for all students.
