Comprehension Strategies for Effective Readers
Language and Literacy | K-12

Reading is not a passive activity. It should involve thinking, questioning, reflecting, and synthesizing to help students do more than merely pass their eyes over the text. Becoming an effective reader involves far more than meeting the expectations of Common Core Standards and state testing. Effective readers are also strong problem solvers, talented writers, and deep thinkers—so when you teach comprehension skills, you’re giving students tools they can use for life.
In this course, you will explore several comprehension strategies and how you can apply them in your classroom. You will learn techniques for teaching all phases of reading, including how to help students prepare to read a text, engage it effectively, and then reflect afterward. In addition, you will investigate the power of think-alouds and read-alouds, and gain insight into how to use them successfully in your classroom.
With the methods and resources from this course, you’ll be able to empower your students to become effective readers, giving them valuable skills they can use in your classroom and beyond.
