Physical Education for Students With Disabilities
Physical Education/Health, Special Needs, Equity | Pre-K-12

Inclusive physical education classrooms are becoming more mainstream than ever before. However, there’s still a significant achievement gap between students with disabilities and their able-bodied peers. Only by looking at advances in accessibility and the latest models of inclusivity and Universal Design for Learning can we hope to eliminate barriers and create fair and equitable opportunities for students with disabilities.
In this course, you will examine the history of physical education for students with disabilities, as well as the significant events and legislation that have led to a more inclusive model of physical education. A well-run inclusive PE class will create an environment that guides and challenges every student to explore the furthest reaches of their physical capabilities without fear of failure or ridicule. Through a close look at Universal Design for Learning principles, you will learn how to support all students’ ability to receive, process, and express their learning, and provide equitable use and access for all physical education lessons.
Using the foundational knowledge from this course, you will be able to cultivate a joyful, safe space for all students to develop physical literacy, and create an environment that conforms to students as they are—not the other way around.
