Educators can renew their licenses in one of five ways:
- 3 years of experience plus 50 clock hours of professional development approved by district
- 3 years of experience plus a 3-credit course
- 3-credit course plus 40 clock hours of professional development approved by district
- 6 semester hours of college credit
- 100 clock hours of professional development approved by district
Please note that if you earn credit at a non-Alabama regionally accredited senior institution, you must submit supplement RCR to verify that the coursework is part of a state-approved P-12 educator program. Renew Your License
Six renewal credits are required to renew or reinstate a regular five-year certificate. Each of the following equals one renewal credit:
- One semester hour of credit earned from a regionally or nationally accredited university or college
- One and a half quarter hours of credit earned from a regionally or nationally accredited university or college
- 15 hours of pre-approved non-academic credit
- 15 hours of continuing education units from an approved provider
Renewal credits must be:
- Related to your employment at the time of renewal (if that employment requires a certificate issued by the Alaska Department of Education),
- Related to at least one of your endorsement areas, or
- A required element of a program that will lead to an endorsement that you are actively pursuing.

Renewable certificates may be renewed with proof of 15 clock hours of professional development activities for each year of the certificate term. One semester hour of college coursework is equivalent to 15 clock hours of professional development activities. You may complete the clock hours or semester hours in various increments per year.
You should submit official transcripts with your renewal form to verify completion of your professional development through an accredited university.

Renewal requirements are specific requirements associated with an educator's Preliminary or Level I credential that outline required extended preparation and professional development needed to upgrade to the Clear or Level II credential. The requirements are determined based on the educator's preparation pathway and documentation submitted with the initial application for certification. Requirements are designed to prepare educators to meet the academic learning or service needs of all P-12 students and must be completed prior to applying for the Clear or Level II credential.

English Learner Professional Development Requirement
Educators must demonstrate completion of training or professional development activities equivalent to 45 clock/contact hours or three semester hours in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education.

To renew a Continuing License, an educator must meet the following requirements:
- Complete the approved mentoring program, if required.
- Fulfill the 90-clock-hour professional development requirement.
- At least one half of the required hours (45 hours every 5 years) shall be in activities relating to the educator’s work with students or staff.
- Clock hours must have taken place during the term of the Continuing License and must be approved by the educator’s employing authority.
Clock hours for college or university courses shall use the following equivalencies:
- 1 semester hour equals 15 clock hours
- 1 CEU equals 10 clock hours
Clock hours shall comply with requirements detailed in 14 DE Admin. Code 1511 Issuance and Renewal of Continuing License.

- 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs); or
- 100 clock hours of Bright from the Start (BFTS)-approved training.
College coursework must be earned at an institution that meets the accreditation standards outlined in GaPSC Rule 505-2-.31: GaPSC-ACCEPTED ACCREDITATION; VALIDATION OF NON-ACCREDITED DEGREES. Final course grades must be “B” or higher. Developmental studies courses and coursework that is audited and/or exempted without credit shall not be accepted.
If you want to take courses for a certificate upgrade, make sure to verify your choice of university partner and degree through the Certificate Upgrade Advisor. You may upgrade your certificate level by completing a degree program that matches one of your existing fields of certification, or by completing a degree program that prepares you for certification in a new field.

- Credits must be tied to a specific area of need designated by district administration.

Renew Your License
Approved renewal coursework may include education courses and/or courses taken in one or more areas on the teaching license. Courses used for license renewal must be from a regionally accredited institution and must have been earned after the issue date of the license you are trying to renew. The licensing advisor at an Indiana institution can advise you about approved renewal courses at that institution. Renewal courses earned out of state do not need to be pre-approved as long as you earn the coursework in professional education or in one or more of the licensing areas. Renewal coursework may be either at graduate or the undergraduate level. However, if you hold an administrative license or a school services personnel license, graduate coursework is strongly encouraged.
Initial Practitioner or 2-year license
The Initial Practitioner license can be renewed twice. Before a third renewal, instructional license holders must submit a 90-point PGP or take a test. School service or administrators can only use the PGP option to start the cycle over again.
Proficient Practitioner or 5-year license
This license is renewable with 6 hours of coursework, a 90-point PGP or National Board Certification.
Accomplished Practitioner or 10-year license
Once you have established a 10-year license, it will renew automatically for another 10-year term. It can be renewed with coursework, a 90-point PGP or National Board Certification.

Renew Your License
Six graduate credits are required to renew the Standard License. Credits must be completed during the term of the standard license (after issue date and before expiration date, or no more than five years old if the license is expired). Credits earned during the term of the initial license will not be accepted. CEU CREDITS OR CLOCK HOURS ARE NOT ACCEPTED. In addition to the six credits, you must also submit a certificate verifying the completion of the child and dependent adult abuse mandatory reporter training. Points toward two credits may be earned through the supervision of student teachers and practicum students. You may earn one credit (limit of one per renewal cycle) by successfully completing an individualized professional development plan.

To add Plus 30 Graduate Hours to a certificate, you should include official transcripts showing graduate credit earned from a regionally accredited university. Graduate credit used toward Plus 30 must be in addition to the graduate credit used in the master’s program. The coursework can be taken prior to, during or after the master’s degree is awarded, provided it is not used in the master’s program.
Louisiana educators can choose any of our CAEP and/or regionally accredited graduate credit partners when selecting a course and will receive a transcript and graduate credit from the university of their choice.
Renew Your License
Louisiana teachers who need to renew a lapsed certificate must provide evidence of earning six semester hours of coursework at a regionally accredited college or university. The coursework must meet the following requirements:
- Teachers with multiple certification areas may complete coursework specific to any of their certification areas.
- Coursework must be reflected on an official transcript from a regionally accredited institution.
- Coursework must be gained within the five-year period immediately preceding reinstatement of the certificate.
- Coursework cannot be a repeat of prior coursework shown on a transcript, unless the student failed or earned a “D” in the course.
- All final approval of coursework is made by the Division of Certification, Preparation, & Recruitment.
- A lapsed certificate may be reactivated for a period of one year, during which time the holder of the certificate is required to complete six semester credit hours of coursework.

Individuals with a Massachusetts professional license must earn at least 150 professional development points (PDPs) every five years to renew the license. Educators and supervisors will work together to create an Individual Professional Development Plan, which must include at least:
- At least 15 PDPs in content (subject matter knowledge)
- At least 15 PDPs in pedagogy (professional skills and knowledge)
- At least 15 PDPs related to Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) or English as a Second Language (ESL)
- At least 15 PDPs related to training in strategies for effective schooling for students with disabilities and the instruction of students with diverse learning styles
- The remaining required 90 PDPs may be earned through either “elective” activities that address other educational issues and topics that improve student learning, or additional content, and/or pedagogy.
Educators may earn credits from out-of-state, accredited colleges or universities that will then convert to PDPs at the same rate as they would for in-state institutes of higher education.

- Submit the Verification of Experience Form indicating teaching for one (1) year within the immediate past five (5) years half time (50%) or more in a legally operated school system while holding or qualifying to hold a regular teaching certificate; or
- Complete six (6) graduate semester hours in education or your content area, within the immediate past five (5) years while holding or qualifying to hold a teaching certificate that has not expired or has been expired for less than five (5) years; or
- If your teaching certificate has been expired for more than five (5) years, fifteen (15) specific graduate semester hours in education are required within the immediate past five (5) years. The hours must be recommended for issuance of the teaching certificate by the certification officer of your approved teacher education institution. The courses shall include:
- A course in instructional techniques
- A practicum consisting of one hundred (100) or more clock hours of contact with students in the classroom setting, fifty percent (50%) of which shall consist of performing instructional duties under the supervision of a cooperating teacher
- A course or courses that address current issues in education, including but not limited to special education, gifted education, reading and writing in the content area, and school law
- Remaining coursework that is directly related to the applicant’s area of endorsement on his or her expired certificate

All first-year New Mexico educators will be issued a Level I Provisional Teacher License, which is a five-year non-renewable license. A Level I teacher must advance to Level II by completing a dossier or a summative evaluation application through the school district. A Level I teacher may advance to Level II after the third year of experience, but must advance to Level II by the end of the fifth year of experience at Level I.
For Level I, II or III license renewal, New Mexico teachers must complete an application for New Mexico Continuing Licensure and obtain a superintendent’s recommendation for continuing licensure (which must be on school district letterhead).

Renew Your License
The North Carolina Professional Educator's Continuing License must be renewed every five years. (The 3-year Professional Educator's Initial License is non-renewable). The renewal process ensures that professional educators licensed as school personnel continually update their professional knowledge and technical competency. Each professional educator's license holder is responsible for knowing and satisfying their license renewal requirements. The window of time for annual renewal is April 15th through June 30th of the year that a license expires.
For a professional educator's license to remain current (or to renew an expired license), 8 units of renewal credit must be earned.

Educators currently employed in an Ohio public school or district, chartered non-public school or community school are responsible for the design of an Individual Professional Development Plan, subject to the approval of the Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC). The plan should be based on the needs of the educator, the students, the school and the school district, and be aligned with the professional educator standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
In accordance with the approved plan, the educator must complete:

Applicants must submit proper documentation verifying satisfactory completion of the equivalent of 120 hours of professional development (PD) training activities completed within the four year term of the credential being renewed. The equivalent of 120 hours equals 120 actual clock hours of instruction/activity time completed; or 8 college credit hours; or a combination of both. One college credit hour equals 15 clock hours. A minimum of the equivalent 60 hours must be directly related to the content area of the credential being renewed.The hours may be accrued by completion of college coursework or completion of training activities delivered by the employing local education agency, national education organizations, related industry organizations, and/or accredited PD provider organizations.

To renew a professional certificate, you must complete six semester hours of appropriate college or university coursework reflecting a 3.0 GPA and related to the public school program as defined in Policy 5202, unless you hold a minimum of an M.A. plus 30 salary classification based on the awarding of a master’s degree. You must complete the coursework for conversion after the issuance of the certificate being converted and within the five-year period immediately preceding the date of application.

The recently passed 2017–2019 Wisconsin state budget contains major changes to licensure rules. College or university credits will no longer be required for license renewal purposes for teachers, administrators and pupil service educators.

Wyoming educators can choose any of our CAEP and/or regionally accredited graduate credit partners when selecting a course and will receive a transcript and graduate credit from the university of their choice. If you prefer, regional options include Andrews University, Augustana University, Concordia University, St. Paul and Greenville University.
Renew Your License
Renewal requirements for Wyoming teachers vary depending on the type of license or permit an applicant holds. For most teaching and administrative fields, five (5) Professional Development/Renewal Credits will be required to renew. The requirements for renewing a specific license or permit are listed on the reverse side of the license or permit itself. Please review the license or permit prior to submitting a renewal application to ensure all renewal requirements for the specific license or permit type have been met.
If you need to obtain credits for your renewal, there are several options available for obtaining Professional Development/Renewal credit hours:
- College courses from an accredited institution
- PTSB-approved workshops
- Continuing education (for nurses, social workers, counselors and speech language pathologists ONLY; classroom teachers may NOT use this option)
- Credits earned while pursuing National Board Certification
